Shanghai to Melbourne

Another pretty uneventful nocturnal flight with more Chinese food and another not very successful attempt at a pill-induced sleep. Nice to watch the graceful, demure hostesses going about their duties; not so nice to watch a Chinese boy standing on a seat and peeing into a plastic bag his mother held, or said mother pulling said boy's ear, or said mother hitting said boy - although he gave as good as he got.

It has been cloudy the whole time on every single flight, and it was raining when we dipped below the clouds to circle over the countryside near Melbourne. Good to get a look at an average landscape with it's yellowy grass and unusual trees, as opposed to a picture perfect touristy scene. Had been reading the London Times on the first two flights, then got up to speed on Chinese affairs from the Shanghai Daily (not in Mandarin) and finally got stuck into The Rough Guide to Australia to whet my appetite for adventure...

  1. Will be following your adventures! Hope you get to experience, in some way, what remains of the Aboriginal culture too.
